When I asked the people in our life-group this question, I got various answers.
The Wedding Coordinator.
The Main Sponsor.
The Officiating Minister.
The Groom.
The Best Man
A regular guest.
When Jesus was invited to the wedding in Cana, He was just a regular guest just like the majority, nothing special. A regular guest would stay in the reception area only, where all the party is happening. He will just wait for the food to be served and his cup to be filled again and again. He wouldn't know what was happening behind.
In the wedding in Cana, Jesus, changed from being a regular guest to someone with special access. This happened the moment that Mary asked him to help. From sitting in one of the reception tables, he stood up and made his way to the kitchen to prevent the impending disaster that was only known to the people in the kitchen.
Usually during a wedding, only the wedding entourage, the family or the wedding suppliers would have access to some areas in the venue. Before the bride marches down the aisle, no one is allowed to see her except maybe her family and the make-up artists. And photographers once she's all made-up. During the reception, only caterers would have access to where the food was stored and or prepared. In this case where the wedding could have possibly been held in a house, the kitchen was off-limits to the visitors. But Jesus was an exception.
He was given free access to the kitchen. When He was there, He was allowed to move around and do whatever he thought was fit to be done. He also commanded the servants with authority.
Now, the question is, if your life is this wedding, what role does Jesus have?
What kind of access have you given to Jesus when it comes to your life? Is he like a regular guest that only gets to see the "nice things" in your life? Do you come to God only when things are going well and everything seems happy and going smoothly as planned? Do you hesitate to approach Him when you need help? When you have failed? When you encounter things that you thought you had figured-out and you thought you could handle on our own?
Do you shut Jesus off from some areas of your lives? Your relationships. Your job. Your finances?
Do you keep Him out of your private life? Do you keep Him out of the kitchen where some messy or dirty stuff are going on? Do you lock the door to keep Him from barging in to discover that something wrong was happening? Do you try to fix things first before you open the door to Him?
Or do you give Him full access to all aspects of your life. Does He have the keys to come into where He wants to and whenever He wants to. Or better yet, do you invite Jesus to come into every room and do some checking, maybe even do some cleaning-up. Do you sit down with Him and let Him lay down to you the actual status of your life, what is wrong, what is missing.
Do you listen to what He thinks should be done? Do you give Him that same authority He had in the wedding in Cana, commanding the servants to fill the jars with water and then to take some and bring to the master of the banquet. Do you trust Him enough to give Him permission to go ahead and fix or clean-up or throw away things as He deems appropriate?
Mary approached Jesus and asked Him for help. She knew who Jesus was and she trusted Jesus enough to allow Him to intervene. She didn't immediately know how He will fix the situation, but she just told the servants "Do whatever Jesus tells you to do" (John 2:5).
Today, do the same thing. Go to God and ask him for help. Open and make accessible every area of your life to Him. Allow Him to exercise the authority to enter where He needs to intervene and to do whatever needs to be done.
